Welcome to the Campaign Desk

Politics is a dirty word. Unfortunately, we see a lot of it surrounding the recreational fishing body. Our Campaign link is here to provide you with relevant information on topical issues that anglers' face. This may include a brief background, relevant contact details on people you may wish to contact in relation to the issue or petitions to sign, which will be forwarded to the relevant authorities.

Peninsula Boat Ramps!

March 10, 2012

After another busy summer, there are sure to be more than a few boat and jet ski operators who wonder about the future of the peninsula boat ramps.  To say they get congested over this busy period would be an understatement.  But what is the solution?  Do we need Jet Ski only ramps? Do we need more Ramps?  Add a comment here and let us know what you think?

The difficulty that the peninsula faces is that for most of the year the number of ramps is adequate. Having said that for a small portion of the year, they are vastly inadequate. There is no doubt that the increase in the number of jet skis in the last decade has placed a major strain on the facilities. With the Frankston by pass set for completion in less than a year it is probably safe to assume that the number of vistors to the peninsula will only increase and with it, the boat traffic. While the staff at Peninsula Total Tackle would love to see another boat ramp built at the end of Boneo road, this in truth is probably unlikely given pressures from green groups etc. It would certainly seem to us that either more ramps or extensions to the current ramps are the only alternative to ease congestion. Having dedicated boat or jet ski ramps does not seem to be a solution, this simply groups the different types of craft together, rather than impacting on the actual congestion.

Having been interstate a fair bit in recent times I can only comment by comparrison. Our boat ramps along the penninsula are terrible in comparison, in quality, facilities an parking. In Victoria we have more than 200000 registered boats but only parking for about 15000, no one wants responsibilty for them so they are left unmaintained with sand build up, jetties are falling appart and are dangerous and it is the most expensive place to launch in Australia, any where else its free or gold coin donation. Not only do we need more ramps but we also need more parking. If thing stay as they are then we may soon find ourself in a position where ramps will end up being closed because they are unsafe leaving us with fewer launch locations and more pressure on the other ramps. In short Victorians in general are being ripped off, poor facilities at a premium price.

During the peak seasons & long weekends I simply avoid taking my boat down to the Peninsula boat ramps due to the long waits & lack of parking. The quality of the ramps, parking & general facilities are generally very poor. Manning of ramps could be a solution to help traffic flow along with 1 x additional ramp at current locations? Funding for any solution should not be an issue with the money generated from parking & fishing license fees & boat/trailer registration being put back into the solution.

we also need filleting facilities on the peninsula. you go to Hastings they they have filleting facilities. i go away to mallacoota sometimes they have filleting facilities and you don't have to pay a cent so why don't we and make rye boat ramp bigger

Andrew Dawson - melbourne, vic. Australia

the boat ramp crisis is just that, a crisis, there have been next to no new public ramps around the Melbourne and Peninsula area's since the 70's yet there are more than 10,000 new boat rego’s annually to say they are busy is an understatement, I do not fish weekends over the summer period anymore due to the congestion and ramp rage that goes on. I can no longer find a car park before or after launching without parking moles away then getting booked for being there, the peninsula ramps are getting busier too because the metro ones are so grossly over crowed that people try and go further a field to find a decent launching place away from the crowds but it simply doesn’t seem to work, it just spreads the increasing problem.

PWC's seem to present 2 main problems: 1.The number have exploded and occupy much of the available already stretched boat launching/parking space. 2.PWC's not following speed rules near shore. As PWC's have much less draft than boats, perhaps different style ramps ( shallower entry-less maintenance), or perhaps portable ramps for summer could be established for these in 'jet ski only' areas.
