Peninsula Total Tackle Fishing Report 24/9/2010

September 24, 2010

Another bumper week on the squid has come and gone. And the good news is that the average size is definitely on the rise. The bad news… well there is none. It’s happy fishing as we ease into the new season and get ready for another fantastic summer of fishing on the Mornington Peninsula.

A few notable squid catches for the week include Baz Gorman who presented us with a fantastic 2.37kg squid. This was only topped by Joe Speziale who, after purchasing a Harimitsu jig in the KN colour, went out and put it to work landing a whopping 2.42kg calamari. Now that’s a sea beast…

Other notable catches include Rob Millar’s 1.84kg squid, which was also pretty impressive.

With the southerly winds this week, many of the bay locations have been firing for those in search of a hungry cephalopod. We’ve had some good reports from the shallow grounds at Safety beach, in front of Rosebud and at Tootgarook. Toward Rye, on the eastern edge of Blairgowrie there is some good ground that Jay Furniss and Dan Lee fished taking some excellent cala this week. Sorrento boat moorings have taken a beating over the last couple of weeks and may be worth avoiding for a week or two.

Jay Furniss took his bag limit again this week.

Joe Farr has been smashing the whiting and reports some excellent bags coming from Queenscliff.

Land based, there have been some great catches of Tommy Rough coming from Portsea Pier. The fish have been of a good size for Tommies and have been pretty thick at times.

Dan Lee and Joe Farr fished land based from Sorrento Pier and Sorrento yacht squadron jetty, taking a nice bag of bait size squid with a couple of healthy models thrown in to keep the boys covered with a meal or two.

Sorrento Pier has been fishing reasonably well for Whiting – and during the middle of the day too. A couple of ripper sessions were reported this week where a half dozen or so angler’s all had 6 or 7 fish in the bucket fishing at the end of the pier.

Ben Broomfield had a good session down at the Martha Cove rock groins. Firstly landing a number of salmon to 55cm on 85mm Squidgy Flickbaits in Pilly colour he then moved into the marina fossicking with Squidgy Wrigglers and landing three quality pinkies to 38cm.
