Peninsula Total Tackle Report 7/5/2010

May 7, 2010

Well, most people would think that the snapper have long packed their bags and left the bay. However, the month of May can be a cracker down the south end of Port Phillip. Staff Joe Bruno, who loves autumn snapper fishing, was on a mission this week – out to prove that classic Melbourne reds are still on offer. Joe and mate Don fished out of Rye, collecting a bag of fresh calamari before heading out deep. The guys were up and about early, putting in the hard yards and heading out around 2am (which does start to get a little hard at this time of year!). True to form Joe smashed the fish collecting four reds between 6kg – 7.5kg. Another monster was dropped. The fish must have been foul hooked as the rig came bag with a scale (the size of a 20 cent piece) fouled over the Gamakatsu 6/0. Congrats to Don on his PB Port Phillip Bay Snapper weighing 6.2kg – cracking late season action on the Mornington Peninsula.

Don could not believe his luck. A late season trip to remember.

Whiting fishing has been pretty hot the last week with good fish coming from Sorrento and around Point King off Portsea. For those fishing the reefy ground around Point Nepean there have also been some fantastic Silver Trevally mixed amongst some cracking King George to 47cm.

Sean Callaghan fished the Mt Martha rocks this week taking a nice feed of 9 calamari on a Yamashita Natural 2.5 in NBK, which is a gold coloured jig. Staff Joe & Gus fished the White Pipe at Portsea and were rewarded with a some fantastic calamari to 2kg. The boys were disappointed to lose a couple of larger models although they did manage to bag out in less than an hour - so they were not too disappointed! The winning jig was a Harimitsu 2.5 in RR colour, which is a red jig with black back. Joe Farr from RIP Charters reported great squid fishing from deep off the sisters in Sorrento. The guys on charter also took a stonker of a Cuttlefish weighing 3kg, yesterday morning.

Dave Elhage with a couple for the dinner table from earlier this week.

RIP Charters spent a couple of sessions offshore from Torquay early this week and can report some good Pinkie fishing with fish to 40cm on the inshore reefs.

Great sea Gars have been taken from Portsea this week. Forget the ‘pencils’ these are the real deal with plenty of fish to 40cm! Use plenty of weight below the float to keep the bait down in the current and upsize your float to get amongst the action.
