Peninsula Total Tackle Report 28/5/2010

May 28, 2010

We’ve had a couple of unusual appearances down on Peninsula to twig one’s curiosity. Ryan Hopper and mate Tim were fishing at the Blairgowrie Marina when the spotted a large sea turtle swimming around!? In another odd sighting staff member Joe Bruno was fishing with mate Pete Manges for squid off Rosebud, when they spotted a dorsal fin in the shallows. Thinking it was a shark they moved the boat in to have a closer look. To their amazement they were confronted with a large (and very alive) Sunfish, a rare and unusual sight in the bay. Joe managed to grab his camera and get some footage, which was a great feat!  The boys were happy to report they also managed their bag of squid!

Peter Marchitto and Jason Farante spent the weekend fishing the peninsula and had a cracker of a time. They boys bagged out on squid on both Saturday and Sunday, also taking a couple of thumping Cuttlefish weighing between 3 -4 kg. Jason and Peter found the best results fishing the Yamashita IBA (red with dots) jig and the Flashmax F10CG Jig (which is green with gold and black stripes). The boys even reported a couple of good sized flathead taken on the jigs! Knowing that they were onto a good thing, Peter and Jason decided to have a fish for a gummy on the south channel off Sorrento. Using a cuttle fish feeler for bait they managed a cracker fish pushing the scales to 15kg. Nice weekend fellas!

A great conclusion to the weekend fishing the Peninsula. Nice fish Peter and Jason!

There are still some nice, fat calamari around if you fish the tidal area around the heads. From Portsea across to Queenscliff and Swan Bay, we have seen some thumping fish pulled in the last week. Travis Grey found some excellent models to 2kg fishing the rumble ground near the cottage by the sea, while Joe Bruno and mate Gus caught some great Cala to 2kg on Gesola jigs in green, while drifting Portsea. Joe and Gus were also rewarded with another nice plate gummy at 6kg, using some of the fresh squid while fishing the south channel off Portsea.

Out of Town – Mat Zoppos got amongst the action down at Port Fairy hooking into as monster Bluefin. They fought the fish for 2.5 hours before it was finally boated. It weighed in at 133.8kg. WoW!

Christian Parsons also fished Portland and admirably took his mum out to catch her first Tuna! Fishing over the weekend Christian reported “Burke St” like scenes with thousands of anglers keen to get in on the action. And why wouldn’t they be… check out this conditions in the photo – let alone the fishing! Congrats to Mel on her first fish!

Back at the Ramp. Christian and Mel - a day to remember.

Friend of the shop Dave O’Brien fished with mate Brett “Yogi” Stewart off Port Fairy early in the week and were rapt to cash in on the BIG fish action managing to land a 111.9kg Bluefin on 24kg. This fish was caught on a Richter Oscar Jr in Orange Grey Black, purchased at Peninsula Total Tackle! Job guys!

Northern Blue Charters

Torres Strait

Dan Lee was lucky enough to travel north last week and fish aboard Northern Blue Charters in the Torres Strait.

This was truly a trip to write home about with over 25 species caught over the eight days. High on the priority list though was targetting the big GT's. With fish to 40kg it was something to remember. Having said that there was also plenty of trolling and bottom bouncing thrown in to keep the group on their toes.

Northern Blue is a live aboard long range mother ship captained by a great bloke, Bob Wallenburg.

As far as these charters go the boat was very reasonably priced. The boat can sleep 10 burley fishos.

Peninsula Total Tackle is looking at organising a customer trip next year. It would likely be in May or November. If you are interested please call the shop and register your interest with Dan.

Here are a few pics to tantalise the taste buds...
