Peninsula Total Tackle Report 26/3/2010
March 26, 2010
With Easter on the way, it’s fantastic to see they we are still getting a stack of reports. In short, the fishing continues to be magnificent down on the Peninsula…
Squid are still thick and have been firing around Safety Beach. Specimens to 1.5kg are still being boated. Many anglers have been asking about fishing jigs on paternoster rigs which we demonstrated recently at our fishing night. This has lead to some cracker catches, especially when the drift is up and the wind and tide are pushing your boat along hard.
Customer Brad reported some nice blue spot flathead coming from shallow water while drifting off Sorrento. He caught three fish to 61cm. The Gulp Watermelon Pearl 3’ minnow doing the damage. This species is a fantastic target for the next couple of months before the cooler water drives them off.
Some nice Bream to 1.5kg have been caught from Anthony’s Nose this week. Best baits have been sand worm. Whiting continue to fish well from the same location, although the cat is well and truly out of the bag and some nights it is standing room only.
Staff member Joe Bruno fished with Charlie Micallef from Savage Seas Adventures on Savage Seas. The plan was to try and capture a decent size snapper, to feature on Savage Seas Adventures Volume 4. The boys launched the boat at 4am to target some squid for bait. By 7:15 a.m. the boys had their first baits in the water. The rod soon buckled over – Joe thinking it was an eagle ray because of its powerful runs, but soon after they realised this was a special fish, Joe hauling in a thumping BIG Red. To see exclusive footage pop in to Peninsula Total Tackle and have a chat to Joe about this great capture.

Joe Bruno with a monster late season Red! Fantastic!
Offshore, we’ve had Striped Tuna popping their heads up again this week out between 40 – 50m. There has also been an unconfirmed rumour of a couple of baby blue fin coming in with them. Lots of talk of Yellow Tail King fish this week, unfortunately very few have actually been caught. Reliable sources however, have sighted fish up to 20kg from Barwon Heads right through Cape Schanck. Staff Member Gavin was also confronted by a maurading bunch of bandits at Safety Beach who were smashing up bait schools but were loath to take bait or lure.
Out of Town – Dan Lee travelled to Portland this week as part of the Fishnet State Of Origin Invitational Comp. With approximately 12 boats and 50 blokes, from both NSW and VIC, it was set to be a great weekend. Day 1 saw most of the boats target Tuna, but unfortunately only those launching at Port Macdonnell saw any action with approximately 5 fish boated for the day. Dan fished aboard Brad Snackman’s boat with mate Johnny Cahill. The boys decided to break the day up with a Mako drift, resulting in one shark around 35kg. Day 2 saw plenty more action with boats from both Portland and Port Macdonnell getting amongst the southern Blue Fin Tuna. Approximately 25 fish were taken for the day including the largest at 55kg and a couple of horse Albacore around 25kg. Dan and Crew targeted makos catching another two, with one estimated around 200kg. It was a massive shark and was happily released by the crew. Well done to Brad, who was on the rod, for his PB Mako.

Brad McDonald aka Snackman hooked up on the Stella 20000 / Tcurve 400 jig stick combo. This is brad fighting the 200kg Mako!

This is the big mako 'going aerial'. A true sight to behold, 200kg of fish cart wheeling out of the water!

This fish jumped six times in total. The crew guessed heights of up to 4 metres!
Almost done...

Ready for release...
Customer Derek and family travelled to Lakes Entrance this week, for a massive week of fishing and prawning. Notable catches include a 4kg Snapper taken while drifting, massive Couta and an absolute stack of prawns.
Correction – Last week we reported James Alexander’s super flathead catch from the south channel. The fish was weighed at Southern Peninsula Angling Club and actually went 2.63kg, not 2.25kg as we reported.
If you would like to be a part of our weekly report feel free to send photos and details of your catch to info@peninsulatotaltackle.com.au
For more information feel free to drop in and see the boys at Peninsula Total Tackle, 11 Boneo Rd in Rosebud.

Tuna Skirts...
For those planning a trip to Portland, the general consensus is that the fishing should heat up over the next 2 - 4 weeks.
Lumo skirts and blacks or purples were popular last year and seemed to work well on the weekend.

These three skirts accounted for a number of fish over the weekend including the 55kg Tuna which fell to the Dorado Flea, pictured on the left.
