Peninsula Total Tackle Fishing Report 4/6/2010

June 4, 2010

How is this for Winter weather – beautiful! The last week has seen an increase in numbers of Australian Salmon being caught. Big schools have been seen around the Rosebud pier, while out in the boat the action has started to fire up around Sorrento. Strangely, the Port Phillip heads area is still relatively quiet. Flicking small Asari Mahi metal slugs weighing only 8 grams has proven to be a winner targeting these fish. Gunamatta is still producing small salmon – we’re all waiting for the big ones to show up and really excite the winter beach scene!

Staff Gavin Fallon got stuck into the salmon at Rosebud, catching around ten fish between 1 – 2kg on 3’ minnow style plastics. Our Supa Salmon comp is running with the current leader being Ben Calamatta with a fish weighing 1.080kg. Be sure to bring in any salmon you catch in for a weigh and measure - $1000 in prizes up for grabs!

Staff Joe Bruno was at it again this week targeting Southern Port Phillip Reds on the first day of Winter! He had a fantastic session landing two snapper at 5kg and 6kg and two gummy shark at 6kg and 16kg, fishing 21m off Mt Martha. With those two Snapper on Tuesday Joe managed a fair feat having caught Reds in all four seasons this year – Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter. Job done!

Boom Boom! Two gummies on the deck...

For those wanting a good feed there are plenty of garfish available out on the “Mud” at the moment. Anywhere from 16m – 21m out from Rye and across to Mt Martha, will see you deep in big gar territory. Keep a fine ground burley trail running and you should have them schooling at the back of the boat in no time!
Chris Peters reports some excellent whiting whiting fishing down off Portsea. He fished in front of the White Pipe Point, to the east of the pier before finding a nice patch of fish just outside the boat moorings to the west of the pier. Chris took his bag of fish with a couple of thumpers around 48cm. Fresh calamari cocktailed with aussie pippi proved the winning bait. Very nice indeed!

Ideal, locally caught, winter snapper bait.

Joe Farr from RIP Charters some excellent fishing for Yank Flathead in the shallows around 3 -6m, out from Mornington Pier.

Offshore, there are some quality Tiger flathead available in around 50m, while down toward Barwon Heads the School Shark have been on the chew. Targeting school shark, Joe Farr suggests light drags and heavy leader to get them to the boat without getting bitten off!
Out of Town – Dan Lee and Paul Barton travelled to Tasmania for the weekend with a group of mates to fish Eaglehawk Neck. The boys were hoping to find a barrel or two but instead were rewarded with plenty of school size Tuna between 15-22kg. It was a great trip with plenty of amazing scenery. It is a unique place to fish where you can be trolling for Tuna just 20m from the cliff face. It is an easy weekend away and well worth a look if you are interested in fishing outside of Victoria – just watch out for the menacing seals who have a fair taste for sashimi.

Locals Baz and Cam hit Port Fairy late last week looking for one of the giant Tuna that have had the fishing community in awe. The boys fished between 50 – 90m. Again no barrels but the boys did crack a number of schoolies around 14kg. The Richter Lumo skirts and the Black Magic black and red accounting for most of the fish.
