Peninsula Total Tackle Fishing Report 25/6/2010

June 25, 2010

Firstly, a quick mention of our fishing night which was held last night at the Rosebud Motor Boat Squadron. The night was a great success and a big thanks must go out to Lee and Morne and the RMBS for hosting the event. We had over 80 attendees and hope everyone enjoyed themselves... next time we'll have to remember the camera in order to take a few pics!!

Flinders pier is catching some nice squid with staff member Paul Barton reporting some good fish to 1.5kg. Fishing on dusk, schools of barracouta played havoc with the baited jigs under floats, stealing bait and causing general chaos. Paul reported the ‘couta were a good size at around a meter. There were also plenty of yellowtail scad, mixed amongst the pier pylons.

Tommy Ruff are being caught in good numbers down at Portsea pier, keeping the punters entertained while they wait for a sizeable cephalopod to take a baited jig. There are good numbers of ‘yakkas at Portsea pier as well, if you push out to the far end. Lightly baited Sabiki rigs are the way to go if you want to take a handful home.

Staff Gavin Fallon visited Rosebud pier casting Gillies 15g silver baitfish, and was rewarded with about a dozen salmon about half an hour. He fished on dusk around 5pm. Interestingly, friend of the shop Tony, from the motor boat squadron, reported another sighting of the Great White that has apparently been hanging around in the area…

Salmon are getting bigger and fatter by the day. Mornington pier has seen some thumpers as has Point Lonsdale pier where Australian Salmon pushing 2kg have been caught fishing the dirty water behind the breaking wash at high tide.

The whiting fishing is all about the pointy end of the peninsula this week with Sorrento, Portsea and Point Nepean starting to turn it on as is often the case during winter. Cuttlefish has been the killer bait of the week.

Out of Town - Andrew from Proline charters reports plenty of school tuna being caught out of Portland. There are occasional Albacore mixed amongst the blues, with one taken at 27kg earlier this week. Interestingly, with water temps at about 14.5c there are still plenty of small and large makos off Portland, if you are inclined to chase a toothy.
