Peninsula Total Tackle Fishing Report 11/6/2010

June 10, 2010

Wow – last week magnificent late autumn weather, this week freezing, wet winter upon us! Given the state of the weather we thought we’d focus on the land based action this week, as few managed to take the time to get the boat out!

Mt Martha rocks has been fishing very well for squid. Most reports suggesting a quick session on the rocks will yield at least a few take-home table calamari. Try the area north of Bradford road just before you reach Hearn Road. The terrain is as it sounds, rocky, so you may need to find a bit of your inner mountain goat, in order to get down to the fishing platform, depending on where you enter from.

Southern Calamari... a winter staple...

Dromana Pier and Rosebud pier have been very consistent on the gar fish and salmon, while reasonable catches of whiting and flathead have been taken from Blairgowrie Marina.

Gunamatta and Rye back beach are fishing fairly consistently now, with a couple of notably large silver trevally coming in as by catch while fishing the usual haunts for salmon and mullet.

Earlier in the week, Terry Brennan spent some time drifting the Mussel Farm this week bottom bouncing for flathead. He was rewarded with a cracker Yank flathead measuring 55cm. The fish fell to ye old humble pilchard bait.

Catch of the week goes to staff member Gavin Fallon, who after an appointment decided to pop down to the Patterson River to throw a lure or two around. After a short work Gavin was confronted by what he thought were sporadic salmon busting on the surface. Discovering he had forgotten his lure pack he had only one option – an old and inexpensive red-head style hard body with fairly ordinary treble hooks. Cast away and bang… Gav was absolutely rapt to discover the “salmon” were actually mulloway. He managed to land two, the best at just over 9kg, and dropped another two. What a session! The fish were caught at around 6pm.

A lure to be remembered.  Snaffling two Melbourne mulloway, it might be one for the mantle piece...

Out of Town – Dave O’brien and John Cahill fished southwest of Port Fairy in 45-50m of water… The boys were kept entertained with Bluefin Tuna to 15kg, but unfortunately missed what everyone is currently searching for – a big barrel! Having said that, a couple of other boats did manage to strike the jack-pot and picked up a couple of fish on Sunday around 90kg & 120kg.
