With the water temp of the bay hovering around 11.5 degrees it won’t be long before it bottoms out and the trend starts to turn upwards. With that in mind it is amazing then to be able to present a report featuring such a fantastic array of fish. It really goes to show, that winter fishing on the peninsula, can be a lot of fun with plenty of our favourite species on offer for those who care to go and have a look!
Salmon continue to be talk of the town. The average size of fish coming from Gunnamatta, Rye back and Portsea continues to average around 1kg. Having said that, we’ve had some thumpers pushing 3kg to really get the surf scene excited. Stewart Kent bought a great bucket of kilo odd fish in to show the store, all of which were taken on 50g Lazers in silver/black. On the day, Stewart reported that lures were out-fishing the blokes using baits at Rye.

Carlo Leopardi also bought a quality 1.53kg aussie salmon in, that was spun from the Portsea surf. The fish was taken on a 40g chrome slug – a very healthy fish indeed!

Carlo spun this fish at Portsea!
Remember our Supa Salmon Comp ends on the 31st of July and with the big fish getting about we are sure to see a flurry of activity in the last couple of weeks. Check out the leader board in store… number 1 position is still very gettable!
Joe Bruno tried something a little different this week and fished, land based, the mouth of Balcombe Creek for a nice 55cm blue spot flathead. Joe Farr from Rip Charters indicates that there are some nice flatties getting about at the north end of the Symonds channel too.
Our old friend the Calamari remains a staple at the moment. While they are not thick like they were two or three months ago, there is still a plentiful supply if you are willing to try. Dan Lee and family, caught a number while drifting the empty western Portsea boat moorings - but found it very quiet out at the Pinnace grounds. Joe Bruno bagged out while drifting inside the artificial reef off the Mt Martha point at Bradford Rd. Paul Barton and daughter Sydney found some quality cala while fishing the shallows out of Blairgowrie.

The Tsuriken Hyper Dart #12 - this jig is awesome, a true winner!

Bang, bang bang - three in quick order!

Syd Barton with a nice little squiddly.
Staff Joe Bruno fished for snapper this week and although he could not help with a report on that front, he was able to provide us with a couple of great pics of two nice Winter gummies that he caught in 21m off Mt Martha. Both fish fell to salmon fillets (which caught last week at Rosebud pier). Good signs that the gummies are still about in good numbers.

Joe Bruno, winter gummy shark.

Quality table fare.
And finally, what Mornington Peninsula fishing report would be complete without a snapper report?! On Wednesday this week, Alf Gysen was happy to be spending his morning, amid ordinary weather, deep off Mt Martha fishing for snapper… He was rewarded with a fantastic 6.5kg Red – what a great catch for a cold July winter’s day. They’re out there…
