Peninsula Total Tackle Fishing Report 30/7/2010

July 30, 2010

Well, after a quick mid winter break we are back on board with the weekly Total Tackle fishing report. Consequently, however, this week’s report is compiled from captures over the last two…

Starting with a cracker from mid last week, Tim Knights and Tim Cook were well rewarded after spending a chilly night down at Shoreham, beach fishing. The evening started pretty strangely with the boys finding a very large and very alive octopus sitting up on the beach. This thing was somewhere between 3 -5kg but provided the best basis for a good nights fishing – fresh bait! A couple of hours before high tide their prize came, a whopping gummy shark of approximately 20kg. That is as good a prize as you will get fishing a cold winter’s night in July! Night work fellas!

Our friend Alf Gysen is keeping the winter Snapper dream alive, after nice fish a few weeks back which we reported he was happy to bring a smaller model around 3.8kg in for a pic. Alf is doing well - if you’re onto them now, you’re sure to be braining them come peak season!

Customer Joe had a great day out this week. He fished out of Mt Martha and managed to find some hot action in about 20m. Fishing from 11.30- 1.15pm he picked up a nice Red at 67cm with another 3 missed. He also managed a nice Gummy, a couple of nice flatties to 53cm and a variety of rubbish -Banjo’s, School shark pups etc. Joe caught squid at Sorrento and around the Sands, to give him the ammo for the day. Nice work!

For those who are happy with a feed during winter the gars are still fishing well. Good captures have been coming from Sorrento and Portsea pier while staff member Joe Bruno has been doing something a little different fishing for them off the beach in front of the BP in Safety Beach. Joe reports some nice ‘sea gars’ as he calls them – ie: not the pencil thin variety. Fish to 40cm have been common, although you will need to wait for calm conditions otherwise casting will be difficult.

Sorrento Pier has seen some nice catches of squid while fishing early mornings. A new jig that we have in store has been an absolute winner, the Harimitsu AK colour. It is a black/Green transparent jig with a red inner and white stripes – no doubt it will be one of the biggest sellers.

Chris and dad, John, were at it again scaring (and catching!) fish down at the Blairgowrie Marina. This time a nice bag of salmon with one particularly quality fish included!

Finally, we can’t finish a winter fishing report without covering a bit of the surf scene. The fishing continues to be excellent with many customers getting amongst the action. Gunnamatta continues to be the sand of choice, while some excellent fishing has also been reported from Portsea. Clyde Dorman caught a cracker weighing to 2.8kg and measuring a thumping 65cm, which is a very nice hunk of aussie salmon indeed. The fish was caught on salted pilchard from Gunnamatta.

This Saturday our Supa Salmon Comp will finish at COB 5pm. The conditions are looking ok for one last crack on Saturday, so get out there! It’s been a great few months with plenty of people weighing fish in. We’ll have a wrap up in next week’s report.

Please remember – If you fish Gunnamatta, take your rubbish home with you! It has been disappointing at times to see so many bait bags, plastic bags etc left in the sand.
