Peninsula Total Tackle Fishing Report 2/7/2010

July 2, 2010

Gunnamatta has been pumping the last couple of days with salmon coming in hand over fist on the rising tide. The light northerlies have provided for some reasonably pleasant fishing, if you don’t mind some thermal underwear and a pair of waders! Customer Jules Frank witnessed plenty of double headers, with the average size of the fish around 800g to 1kg. For those not brave enough to hit the surf, the piers continue to fish well with Rosebud a standout - smaller fish going off at dawn and dusk.

Even on these wet and wooly days the whiting continue to fire if you look in the right places. Both the Sisters at Sorrento and Point Nepean have been fishing well with Dan Lee and mate Chris Earle getting a nice bag of fish in about 4.5m. Best baits were a cocktail of fresh squid and Australian pippi.

Dan Lee took this fish on a cocktailed bait of pippi and fresh calamari.

On the squid scene, customer Gus reported some very healthy catches, and at a good size, coming from west Rosebud, out in front of the boat hire. Winter can be great time to get amongst the squid down on Peninsula, as many of the moored boats have been taken off the water, allowing access to some premium ground which can be difficult to access during summer. Dan Lee and Chris Earle took advantage and drifted around the reasonably empty Blairgowrie moorings picking up a dozen squid in short order on Sunday, while Jay from Hocking Stuart Rye found a good patch directly out from the Blairgowrie marina in the shallows before you hit the South Channel.

Mooring squid taken on a Gladiator 8'01', Stradic CI4 and Flashmax F11CG Jig - what a combination!

While the gummy sharks can often go a little quiet in the dead of winter, we’ve seen some good catches over the last week or so. Customers are finding best results using fresh and even live squid as Jason Patterson reported.

For those who may not have heard there has been some exciting news over the last couple of weeks with the Government announcing that the Devilbend Reservoir will be opened for recreational fishing. At this date the finer details have not been released, ie: when it will be open, what kind of access will be allowed etc, having said all that this is a massive win for freshwater recreational angler’s on the Mornington Peninsula, opening up a great new local fishery! It is understood that some stocking will take place. Woo Hoo!
