Peninsula Total Tackle Fishing Report 16/7/2010
July 16, 2010
Well, it is that time of year and we are all about the Salmon again this week. The fishing from all the back beaches has been good with fish reported from Rye Back, Koonya, Portsea, St Andrews and of course the stalwart Gunnamatta. It seems there is an increasing trend to lure fishing, with plenty of customers getting amongst the fish using Lazer lures. It certainly makes a surf trip a lot easier when all you have to carry is a spin rod and a handful of metal slugs! There is no doubt is is a fantastic way to ‘prospect’ a beach until you find fish…

Bianca with our Supa Salmon Competition leading fish! Keep them coming in only two weeks to go!
Dan Lee and Joe Farr (Joe Farr Fishing Charters 0488 229 752) spent Saturday morning spinning for salmon. The boys collected a ripper bag of 20 odd fish in just over an hour. It was a massive amount of fun, both the boys were pumped!

Customer George has also been causing havoc down at Gunnamatta, catching big bags of salmon on his beloved bait – chicken breast (no skin!).

George pretty pleased with bucket full of salmon.

Salmon a plenty!
Tim Knights bought a couple of cracker Salmon into the shop for a weigh & measure in our Supa Salmon Comp. The fish weighed 1.91kg and 1.95kg – very healthy indeed. Keep bringing them in… only two weeks to go!

A nice silver trevally nudging 1kg was a nice accompaniment to this corker salmon.

Big Bertha.
Local guide and guru Charlie Micallef of Savage Seas Adventures had a great night in 17 m of water off Portsea. Using a small Calamari he hooked up to a decent sized snapper, fishing the small tidal window of opportunity at night. Fresh baits key to success at this time of year.

Winter Snapper on the Mornington Peninsula. Woo Hoo!
Land based, customer Chris and his father John fished the Blairgowrie Marina over the weekend taken a quality bag of 12 squid, a few barracouta and a few salmon. Not bad for land based winter fishing!

Marina Calamari on the Harimitsu EOR.

John happy to get amongst the land based action. Salmon are great fun on light gear from the pier.
Jules Frank found a few of the big squid while fishing off the Sorrento boat ramp pier. Pretty impressive stuff from the shallows at the ramp! Jules was happy to release the big female – a nice way to end a good nights fishing.

While the photo is a bit blurry you can see this is an exceptional mid winter, boat ramp Calamari. And the best thing... she is still out there. Well done Jules!
Good patches of quality flathead have been caught out near the aqua culture lease toward the top of Mud Island. Well worth a look if you are not taken with squid or salmon at the moment but still want a quality feed of fresh fish!
Out of Town – Dave O’brien and son Jack fished out of Portland just behind Lawrence Rock to land some nice school bluefin. Dave was particularly pleased to land some of the fish on a skirted lure that he made himself (pictured), including the moulding of the head. Nice work Dave… and congrats to young Jack on his first bluefin, may it be the first of many. The fish was caught on a TLD25 running 10kg line.

Fish on the deck. Jack with his first SBT.

Dad's home made skirt... a proven fish catcher!
On a bit of a sour note, some of you may be aware that there has been a new proposal for 19 marine parks in Victoria by the Victorian National Marine Parks association (VNMPA). This includes extending the Point Nepean marine Park, creating another marine park at Clifton Springs and another in the North Arm of Westernport Bay. We absolutely oppose these new parks and would urge you to log on to our politics section and sign our online petition which we will present to the relevant authority. Please, please, please fill in your address details and add a comment.
