Peninsula Total Tackle Report 22/1/2010
January 22, 2010
Dan Lee reports some pretty big news from down on the Peninsula. Over the last couple of days a significant school of Striped Tuna has shown up at Port Phillip heads. A number of boats have reported multiple catches, with the boys from Pro Line Charters managing to snag a number of fish for their customers. This is a pretty unusual event and one to get a bit excited over! While stripies are not necessarily the best table-fare it is still pretty exciting to see big numbers of the fish appear right on our door step. Similarly to the salmon, the fish seem to be enjoying the 3” and 4” white and clear octopus skirts. The fish being taken are between three and four kilos and no doubt will provide for some exciting fishing on light gear over the Australia Day weekend.

We’ve had good reports of pinkies on the broken ground between Rye and Rosebud in 9m of water.
The salmon continue to fish well both inside Point Nepean and outside the heads.

Luke Taylor with a feisty pinky which took a gummy bait. Note the circle hook pinned in the corner of the mouth.
Customers Ian and Travis report big snook being trolled from around the Fort using small hard bodied divers.

Plenty of Calamari are on offer right along the peninsula.
Land based, we’ve had numerous reports of pinkies from the Sorrento Pier this week. You will have to work through the undersize fish, but if you persist you will find some nice pan sized pinkies amongst them. Best fishing has been after dark. Rye Pier is fishing well for gars and over the last few days some good schools of salmon have been entertaining anglers right along the peninsula.
We’ve had two more reported catches of Mako this week from out in front of Portsea/Sorrento. Due to the ensuing ban, this week could well be your last chance to catch a mako, so we wish all anglers success! And remember we have 10 litre blocks of shark burley in stock if you are planning a day chasing shark. If you are concerned about the ban on Mako fishing, feel free to drop into the shop and sign the petition which is to be tabled in parliament by the environment shadow minister.
And remember, send us your reports & photos to be part of our weekly report: info@peninsulatotaltackle.com.au Alternatively, upload your fishing pics in our gallery at www.peninsulatotaltackle.com.au
