Peninsula Total Tackle Report 18/02/2010

February 19, 2010

Big gummies are on the loose with at least half a dozen customers reporting fish around the 25kg mark this week. Staff member Dan fished with mates Jay and John early on Thursday morning this week catching two fish, the first around 15kg and the second around 11kg. Silver trevally was the key bait, both fish falling on slack water at the top of the tide.

John Cahill nails the second fish of the day.  Released to swim again...

Still plenty of squid around, with some big models reported from the mouth of Swan bay. If you are in a boat, the area around the Sorrento ferry channel, the boat moorings around the ramp and the grounds off Point King at Portsea, have been extremely productive.

Gun Bait.  Rigged & Ready for a gummy shark!  Black Magic KL style hooks ideal for the purpose!

Land based, we’ve seen good catches of yellow eye mullet from Gunnamatta back beach and some pinkies from Portsea. The salmon are still a little thin however. Anthony’s nose is still firing on the King George Whiting. Best times have been evening rising tides. Staff Member Joe Bruno reported his first Melbourne Mulloway, getting on the bandwagon and heading over to Corinella for an evening fish this week. He was rapt to land a gleaming beauty around 80cm.

Ok ok while the following photos may make this look like a little soapie, staff Joe Bruno was still very pleased to take home his first Mulloway!

Snapper are still fishing well east of Mud Island between the aqua culture leases and the tide stick to the north east. 23m is the prime depth with plenty of big gummies in the area as well. If you use a little ground burley you should also find gars schooling at the back of the boat to keep you entertained while you wait out a trophy snapper! Fish the incoming tide in the morning and use fresh baits. You will need some patience however, due to the great abundance of by-catch in the area.

If you get bored chasing Reds, scoot over to the whiting grounds off the Pinnace channel where some excellent fish to 44cm have again been caught this week. Best baits have been cocktail baits of fresh squid and pippis.

Out of Town – Mick and George took trip to Yalata in South Australia camping & fishing along the beach. The boys managed to catch some absolutely magnificent Mulloway to 90lb… Unbelievable – I’ll let the photos do the talking!
