Peninsula Total Tackle Report 05/02/10
February 5, 2010
Mini Marlin, more commonly known as Garfish, are the talk of the town this week. The piers have been thick with these feisty little guys, with Rosebud fishing particularly well late into the evening. Targeting these guys is pretty simple - a consistent trail of ground burley, a pencil float and either short shank or long shank size 12 hook baited with silverfish will see you amongst the action. If fishing at night take a pack of mini glow sticks to attach to your float.
Land based reports have been all the rage this week with customers also reporting good catches of Pike and Slimey Makerel from Portsea. Small pinkies have been caught spasmodically from most of the piers, while schools of salmon have been making a showing at almost all of the local haunts.

Ben Calamatta with a pretty little soapie!
Ben Calamatta, Liam and staff member Gavin took advantage of the full moon and fished for Mulloway again this week. The boys put in the hard yards taking the long drive to Corinella. Ben was able to add another notch to his belt, taking a modest fish around 65cm. No record breaker but a Melbourne Mulloway all the same…

Gavin Fallon with a Yarra River Murray Cod.
Staff Member Gavin had a busy week of fishing also venturing to the Yarra River for his second crack at Melbourne Murray Cod. While it may be news to some there is actually a secret cod fishery right here in Melbourne. Gavin was excited to catch not one but two Murray Cod. Both fish were released.
Catch of the week goes to Sam Nobello who had two excellent days trolling around the heads. He managed nine Yellowtail Kingfish including one fish pushing 10kg. He had plenty of bust-offs and found the fish in between the Salmon schools. Using cut-down clear octopus skirts baited with a squid tentacle, Sam was rapt to find such awesome fish close to home.

Joe Bruno with a nice late season snapper caught this week on fresh gar.
