Quite simply this report is based on customers and friends fishing tales - without them, we have nothing! So thank you.

We now head into the busiest time of the year on the peninsula. We wish everyone safe boating and fishing, keep your head at the ramps – they are pretty crazy… and have a fantastic Christmas. We’ll back with our weekly report in about three weeks… hopefully with some amazing stories of fish caught on the peninsula over the chrissy period!

Our report hotline will still be running, so whatever time of day – you are free to send us a couple of pics and a story of two of your latest fishing adventure! Send pics and info to 0421 359 022!

But let’s get to it….

Typical of this time of year we have had a tremendous run of gummy shark. Fish to 20kg have been common with a lot between 8 – 12kg. A range of baits are doing well with fresh fish strips, particularly salmon and locally caught species such as snook, nailing plenty of fish. Of course fresh cala is also a winner and with plenty on hand, it is an easy bait to collect on your way out fishing.

Ben Broomfield and mate Matt Luscombe managed three very healthy gumbos which fishing the early morning tide late this week. The fish were all in that mid range bracket around 10kg – but no complaints from a quick fire session that lasted saw 45 mins of excellent action. The guys were fishing the south channel. Best baits were fish strips – fresh cala remained untouched.

Jay Furniss and John Cahill managed a very healthy gumboot, that went 20kg. Although hard to tell from the photo, she was apparently a lovely dark colour almost devoid of the typical ‘star’ spots you see on that run down the flanks of the fish. The fish took some frozen salmon.

A couple of squid...

...from here for bait.

And Jay Furniss from Hocking Stuart Rye with the result!

It's no joke to say that big gummies can make a mockery of your landing net!

Wazza, recovered from his recent snapper spiking, was at it again with this nice little gummy.

Bags of bait like this are common in both PPB and WPB at the moment.

Snapper continue to fish well off Mt Martha. The plagues of school fish between 1.5kg – 3kg are well and truly in the area and will provide plenty of action for the holiday crowds over the next few weeks.

Barry Unsworth with his first 5kg snapper caught on King George whiting out at the Fairway.

There have been good snapper caught around the mussel farm at Safety Beach and out around the point.

Chris has been at it again this week with a thumping 6kg fish caught from his Hobie on a silver whiting in 10m of water off Frankston.

Ben Broomfield with another from just off Fishermans beach.

Andrew Walters and David Beardsley found it slow going fishing 4 different spots for 5 snapper off Mornington this week. Best baits were fresh cala and gars.

Paul Cooney with mates Tom and Simon fished aboard Paul's boat, Roo Shooter taking a wicked bag of fish including a 7.5kg model. The guys were off Mt Martha... great going!

There are heaps of small squid being caught from Sorrento through Rye, Tootgarook and Rosebud in the 2.5m – 5m areas. There numbers are incredible, but the size of the fish is pretty modest with hood lengths between 10cm and 20cm.

For something a little different Dan Lee, Paul Percy and Tim Dettmann took some hard body lures and did some trolling around the reef areas toward the end of the peninsula. Catching a range of species including Long Finned Pike (not snook!), wrasse and some other ooglies… It was a bit of fun for something different.

Paul Percy proves that anyone can catch a squid!

Be prepared to catch plenty of these this summer...

...and these!

Some nice flathead are coming from the banks off the north east side of Mud Island. Fish to 45cm are commonly being caught while drifiting and bottom bouncing most of your run of the mill frozen baits – squid, blue bait and pippie.

Brant Glascott caught this nice 45cm flattie while fishing the shallows at Blairgowrie Marina.

Out of Town, Andrew Walter fished the cod opening land based. The boys fished from the bank at Yarrawonga. The guys managed a bundle of fish with the largest going 55cm. Catch of the week though was an ancient rod and reel - now bound for the mantle piece. Check this...

From the murky depths they landed this beauty!

And a few of these too.

Benny Reinwald with mates Dan Windsor and Fiona McGowen have been chasing kings down off Gippsland. Important to this pursuit is getting some bait - check these catches for AAA grade livies!

Benny and Dan!

Honkers a'plenty. Dan's new PB of 2.7kg which went on a Gancraft.

SEN-Sational Fiona!

Throw a couple of these stunning salmon into the mix and you have some cracking bait!
