Peninsula Total Tackle Fishing Report 27/8/2010

August 27, 2010

Well the weather has not been kind to us this week and unless you are a polar bear, it probably put you off the fishing too. Having said that we managed to scrounge together a couple of late season reports to keep you entertained before the nicer weather arrives over the weekend and you can get out there and fish!

The best report of the week came from Andrew Macintyre who managed two excellent gummy shark, both just over 20kg, while fishing in 23m at the top of Symonds channel. Both fish fell within an hour of the high tide, both were released and both took fresh salmon fillets which had been caught at Gunnamatta. A pigeon pair, without doubt!

Land based, the salmon continue to fish well at Gunnamatta and as is often the case at this time of year a few bigguns have shown up. Customer Alan Hopkins managed two excellent fish at 2.05kg and 1.35kg both falling to surf poppers in the blue and black varieties.

While Portsea back beach was quiet a week or two ago, some salmon have also moved into the area providing some good fishing on the top of the tide. Customer Shane reported eight fish to 1.5kg earlier this week.

Gar fishing seems to be the flavor of the month down here at the moment. Safety beach jetty, where the ramp is, has seen some good fish as has Anthony’s nose.

There are big whispers of big squiddlies coming off both Portsea Pier and Flinders pier this week… get down there and see for yourself.

Customer Shane got amongst some excellent whiting just east of the Blairgowrie Marina. He managed one fish pushing 45cm! Shane was rapt as it was his first time using Gamakatsu Shiner hooks, which have an absolutely sensational hook-up rate on Whiting.

Shiner hooks... don't be confused, they are not a circle hook - you can still strike when you feel a fish bite. They provide excellent hook-up rates on whiting!

No doubt a few punters will get the boat out this weekend targeting Calamari – so remember our Comp is on until Oct 15th. Make sure you bring any squid you catch into the shop for a weigh, measure and photo. First prize includes over $500 worth of gear including an Gladiator Egi rod and Daiwa Cy reel. Second rod includes some Megabass squid jigs valued at over $150.
