Peninsula Total Tackle Fishing Report 13/08/2010

August 13, 2010

The question is this; is it too early to be getting worked-up about Snapper? You would have thought so. Problem is, we are already starting to get reports in!!

John Cahill and Dave O’Brien fished 17m off Seaford. The boys caught one fish and dropped another two (typical early season tentative bites). Having said that, you can’t complain when you are starting your season in August!

Encouraged by early season success, Dave fished again later this week and managed another fish, this time with a little size to it. See below.

Catch of the week goes to Matt Cini of Reel Time Fishing Charters who managed an absolute ripper bag of ten snapper to 5.8kg, fishing off Carrum. Best baits were pilchard and squid. Matt fished the rising barometer and was rapt to get stuck into some early season fish.

Happy Reel Time customers!

Offshore, Joe Farr (0488 229 752) fished with clients down at Barwon Heads taking a nice bag of pinkies before doing some drifts closer to the heads for a big bucket of Sand Flathead to 45cm.

For the land lubbers out there, schools of trevally have been hanging around both Sorrento and Portsea piers in the evenings. Baited sabiki jigs should see you amongst a few.
George from Compleat Angler Dandenong fished with a mate off Sorrento pier on Saturday night and was pleased to hook a couple of sharks. Using fresh Silver Trevally for bait, the boys ultimately broke off with the fish thrashing around on the surface. Unable to exactly see the species in the dark, they felt it was probably a Seven Gill Shark based on it’s fight characteristics.

Menzie Savea fished with his dad David, and managed another horse Salmon, weighing 2.4kg. The fish took a blue surf popper down at Gunamatta fishing the morning rising tide. The fish was amongst a nice bag of ten or so fish. Gunnamatta still seems to be the beach of choice. Dan Lee tried his luck at Portsea on Sunday morning spinning for Salmon and can report slim pickings, or no pickings, to be precise!

2.4kegs of Australian Salmon!

Gars are still on the bite. Customer James Maffescioni, son Jack and mate Lachlan fished off Safety Beach from around 4:30 until dark, catching a whopping 51 gars! They left the fish biting.
Chris Firkin, George and Co. reported some mid size squid caught at Flinders this week. While there have been a few bigger models at Portsea. Bazz Gorman weighed a 1.42kg (39cm hood length) in for our Sea Beast Squid Competition… an early leader in the race! The fish was caught at Queenscliff.

Sight of the week – A couple of customers and Joe and Gavin from the shop were lucky enough to witness a big pod of dolphins schooling salmon almost onto the beach at Anthony’s nose… It was apparently a massive commotion, as the dolphins took their fill! Shame no one bought the camera…
