Peninsula Total Tackle Fishing Report 06/08/2010
August 6, 2010
Well it has been a wet, woolly week down on the Peninsula. With the wind up and the rain well and truly coming down, it has been the brave few who ventured out in search of a winter fish.
Local fishing nutters, Jules and Pete, accompanied by our very own Joe Bruno, hit Safety Beach in search of gars. The boys were rewarded with a great feed of around sixteen fish. Good fun on light gear – catching mini marlin, as we call them, can be a great way to pass a few hours.

Jarrod Day and mates fished Gunnamatta back beach this week, spinning for salmon. The boys managed a handful of nice fish to 1.2kg including a Tailor at about that size, which is a pretty unusual catch. Tailor occasionally turn up in Westernport and are regularly caught at ‘the warmies’ in Newport, near the Westgate Bridge, where the power station empties warm water into the water. They are certainly rarely seen by anglers fishing the 14 degree winter water at Gunnamatta!

Anyone lost a Tailor? Pic courtesy Jarrod Day.
There has been a good school of Salmon popping their heads up around slack water off Portsea, inside the bay. The fish have been a good size. It is worth trolling around if you are in the area around Portsea and down to the old cattle Jetty.
There have been some big monster squid caught out of Nepean Bay, Queenscliff & Sorrento this week. Joe Farr from Joe Farr Fishing Charters caught a good bag of approximately 10 sea beasts averaging 1kg. It’s a good sign that the next month will start to see some big catches of quality Calamari.

Our Supa Salmon Comp came to an end this week – We are pleased to announce the winners:
1) Clyde Dorman with a 2.80kg Salmon, taken while spinning off Gunnamatta. Clyde took home a Daiwa Sensor Surf Rod and Daiwa Emcast 4500 reel along two Shimano Southern Snapper Rods and some assorted lures. Value over $700.
2) Menzie Savea finished 2nd with a 2.26kg Salmon and took home a Daiwa Emcast 4500 reel and squid jigs. Value over $200.
3) Bianca Reed finished 3rd with a fish weighing 2.08kg and took home a Shimano and assorted metal lures.
A big Congrats to all the entrants, it was a great comp with plenty of entries. Well done to all who braved the winter colds in search of a Salmon.

Friend of the shop Tam Missen, was down at Portland this week and had a couple of interesting home-made videos for us. Exchanging his normal array of game outfits for a kid’s Silstar spin rod and reel – he went a long way to proving you don’t really need $10,000 worth of tackle to catch a tuna…. Check it out:
