Peninsula Total Tackle Fishing Report 21/04/2012

April 22, 2012

It seems we have had an early start to the surf scene this year. Easter always sees a few punters hitting the back beach, with nice calm whether and without the chill of winter it can be a great month down on the back beaches. What’s been impressive this year is that there have been some really nice salmon up to 2kgs and half a metre in length.

Good customer Phil Hickox caught about a dozen this week, the biggest going 45cm. He reported that the blue and white popper fished as the bottom bait, was the winner taking plenty.

We are seeing some good squid with hood lengths up to 45cm taken from some of the shallow grounds in the last week. Staff Jules and Damian How fished off Blairgowrie catching about 16 or 17 squid on, yes you guessed it, the Shimano White Sephia jig 14T in size 3.0. What a ripper that jig has been… genuinely, one of the greats!

James the Chef fished last weekend from both Anthony’s Nose and the Mt Martha rocks. James said that with the northley winds slapping against Anthony’s nose, it made it pretty messy. Consequently however he saw a few pinkies between 32cm and 38cm caught. From Mt Martha James managed a nice bag of 5 cala with hoods between 12cm - 20cm and a size 2 pink jig. Not big, but very tasty….

The snapper have been "on" this week with good reports filtering through from wide off Mornington and right down to 16m off Rye. At this time of year using plenty of pilchard burley and pilchards for bait will see you in with a good chance of nailing some Autumn Snapper.

Charlie Micallef caught these two fish while fishing deep off Rye.

Bill Adamopoulos caught these two reds fishing off Mornington on Tuesday morning. He reported plenty of fish on the sounder. Both fish took Silver Whiting.

Brett Edwards has been fishing for snapper out wide for a number of weeks now. After having no luck in 20m he moved to 16m off Mt Martha and managed one solid Snapper on fresh yakka. After that, no action.

Gummy Shark reports continue to come in. We were pretty pleased to see a couple of our customers, Shaun Kyster and Matt Garett, who after reading last week's report of gummies around the Rye Wreck decided to have a crack. They boys had a cracking session landing three, one at 12kg, one at 6kg and there was a throw back. They also lost another fish after having a double hook-up, lines crossing and one getting cut off! Well done fellas!

Brett Edwards and his brother Gary fished in 16m off Rye, catching a very nice gumbo. Sticking with his winning formula, Brett caught the fish on fresh yakka.

Chris Varvarigos has had a couple of good quality sessions on the whiting. Chris has been sticking pretty close to home, fishing Sorrento Sisters.

Out of Town, Staff Gav Fallon fished up at Jamieson this week taking a heap of browns and rainbows to 35cm and a few blackfish at night while fishing bait.

Nathan Wigmore took young son Max fishing at Caloundra in Qld this week. Max was pretty happy to catch his first non-toadfish fish.
