Peninsula Total Tackle Report 9/4/2010
April 9, 2010
Flinders has been fishing well this week with both customers and staff taking advantage of some killer size calamari. Staff Paul Barton ventured to the pier managing a good bag, the largest going 2.1kg. Johnny Cahill, staying at Flinders over Easter, ventured into the protected bay on his kayak. One of his best hauls included his bag of ten squid weighing 8.2kg – now that is a pretty good average! The squid fishing locally continues to be exceptional, so it is well worth a look if you are wondering what to do with your next spell on the water.

The salmon fishing has been reasonably good for those targeting the species from safety beach and up along the coast to Mornington. Some nice schools have been seen at Mornington Pier, yet the Port Phillip Heads and back beaches are still very patchy. There has been little krill around this year at the heads, which may be the drving factor behind the lack of salmon.

Customer Peter Hynson has a classic session while fishing over in WPB off stony point near bouy 17. The boys amassed a dozen whiting, a massive bag of good sized flathead and the catch of the day - a monster Silver Trevally. Believe it or not the fish weighed in at 5.5kg and took a humble cube of pilchard. What a catch!
There are still a few snapper poking about as Dad/Son partnership, Randy and NoahTucker found out. The boys fished just north of Ansetts in 21m using fresh squid tubes stuffed with pilchards with a heavy burley trail running. They were rewarded with a couple of nice Reds as well as a nice bag of squid on their way in.

Squid, squid everywhere! Noah understandably pleased with his day on the water!
Squid continue to fire land based as young Nick Simic found over the Easter weekend, impressing the crowds on the Rye Pier by taking a cracking 31 squid over 3 days. Nick reports the killer jig was the Flashmax 8870 (Black & Gold). Well done Nick!
Out of Town – Tony from the Rosebud Motor Boat Squadron travelled to Portland this week. The fishing was still a little patchy but he was happily rewarded with a couple of Albacore and a couple of Blue fin at around 22kg, taken on a Rapala X-Rap in Blue Mackerel. Tony was also pleased to manage one King fish from the Lee breakwall…an all round good feed.

Although the fishing wasn't hot, a quality tuna like this will still provide for plenty of meals!
Portland Report – from Marty Ellul.
Over the next couple of months we are going to regularly include a paragraph on Portland – for all those interested in Victoria’s true Game Fishery! Thanks Marty for your help with this!
The Bluefin have been quiet over the last week as we have moved through the full moon period. Having said that, the last couple of days has seen a bit of a pick-up in activity with sporadic reports. Albacore have been fishing well both out of Portland & Port Macdonnell. The next 3 - 4 weeks should see an all round increase in activity so stay tuned! Locally, the mulloway fishing at Nelson was a bit quiet over the Easter weekend, while the bream have been fishing exceptionally well in the Hopkins River.
