Peninsula Total Tackle Report 30/4/2010
April 30, 2010
Squid are still firing all over the place. Staff Gavin managed to find some nice examples while fishing the Flinders pier this week. He took a number of squid to 2kg which would put smile on anyone’s dial! Customers Naume and Daniel reported a great session where they bagged out on a mix of small and large squid at Portsea Pier, while Staff Dan and Paul did the same on smaller models while drifting by the White Lady marker off Rye. Squid fishing is truly going off at the moment with plenty of new Japanese products flooding the market. Stay tuned as we have some hot new stuff coming into the shop soon!

'Gotta be happy with this Flinders Pier special!
The salmon seem to be making a more regular appearance on the back beaches. Regular surf customer George, who religiously fishes Gunamatta, reported his first all-salmon catch for the season. He caught 15 or so salmon, plenty of which were throw backs, but salmon all the same. All fish took whitebait. John Kovacs reported some big schools of Salmon as he driving up the Pinnace channel. He had plenty of fun throwing plastics at them to catch a bag. Mt Martha to Mornington continues to provide regular reports from boat, rock and pier for those chasing the species. So all in all, some good signs that the salmon fishing is starting to hot up down this end of the world!

Paul 'Ancaman' Barton a regular tormentor of squid on the Peninsula.

Jules Frank and mate Pete have been thinking outside the square, avoiding the crowds, and collecting great bags of mixed fish off the local boat ramps.

Squid fishing - magical!
While on the back beaches we have had some good catches of gummy shark to 6kg being caught after dark this week from Gunamatta.

Naume and son Daniel collected this terrifc bag from Portsea Pier.
Gars are plentiful. Unfortunately, many are of the ‘pencil size’ variety. If you are looking for a better feed try the Mt Martha rocks which has provided some great specimens to 40cm this week.
Regulars, Jules & Pete, who have been visiting the Sorrento and Rye boat ramps report some good catches of whiting and a number of quality Snook coming from Sorrento in the evenings.
Out of Town – customer Naume and son Daniel had a great time fishing the rocks at Merimbula. Using live baits they managed to catch a plethora of Bonito. The boys were also able to pick up fish spinning. The best results coming from 40 gram red and white Raiders, a blue Nilsmaster, a red and white REM diving lure and various other slugs in a small baitfish profiles between 25-35 grams.

Seen one of these before? A Watson's Leaping Bonito...
