Peninsula Total Tackle 2/4/2010
April 2, 2010
If you have been out on the water this week you would understand that it is hard to start the report without mentioning the squid fishing - which has been exceptional! More than one customer has agreed that it has possibly been the best fishing for the season, with novice anglers through seasoned calamari-catchers finding it easy to get their legal bag of squid. The reports are coming from far and wide, and if you have a local squid haunt, odds on they are out there at the moment. Safety Beach, Mt Martha rocks, Pinnace Channel, Sorrento moorings – to name a few of the locations holding bags of squid. Jigs named in previous reports are still doing the damage although we have had a bit of a run on the Gesola GE06 Jig pictured below.

Landbased, the salmon are still up and down at Gunamatta but the yellow eye mullet are thick. Customer George reported over 50 fish in two sessions, using chicken for bait. The popular area in front of the second car park has been popular and will be sure to be busy over the Easter weekend.
Customers Jules & Pete tried something different this week and rather than fishing from the piers decided to actually fish the weedy grounds in front of the Sorrento boat ramp. The boys were pleasantly surprised with nice mixed bags of squid and whiting over a few different sessions.

Gummy Sharks have been fishing well out on the ‘Mud’. When we refer to the mud we are generally talking about the area on the to the north of the Great Sands, between Hovel Pile and the tidal gauge post to the north east of Mud Island. Charlie Micallef and staff Member Joe Bruno again fished the area catching another nice snapper and a gummy shark around 10kg. Customers Jason & Brad also nailed a nice fish around 13kg from the south channel at Portsea.

Killer baits for Killer Gummies!
Jay Furniss was rewarded with a cracking catch of yank flathead while flicking plastics over the shallow sand & weed beds. Best plastics were the dark 70mm squidgy pro wrigglers in Grass Hopper & Poddy. He caught six fish to 60cm… a very healthy bag indeed!
